Back to Beauty: Your Back to School Makeup Tips

by Jada Mohammed

If you're anything like me, you spent this summer bare-faced and free. In this crazy Miami heat, I just couldn't bring myself to paint my face with anything more than Beauty For Real's 24/7 Waterproof I-Line and HI-DEF Mascara.

Now that fall is rapidly approaching and those beloved summer nights are becoming a distant memory, it's time to start getting back into my usual makeup routine. I like to start my day off with a cleanser and some Lip Revival Sugar Scrub. My Beauty 360 cleanser gets rid of the dirt built up on my face overnight and my sugar scrub brings my chapped lips back to life.

Since classes start so early (ugh!), I dread the idea of a full face of caked-on foundation. Thankfully, MVP Perfect + Protect Tinted Moisturizer SPF 25 + Concealer has such a light presence that it feels as if I am not wearing any foundation. Although now that I think about it, that's probably because MVP isn't a foundation. The tinted moisturizer is so pigmented and perfectly matched to my face that sometimes I forget it's not actually a foundation. The concealer hidden in the cap is perfectly matched to my skin tone and it makes getting ready in the mornings so much faster. After filling in my brows (never too early to be fleeky), I like to apply some HI-DEF Mascara. The wand makes for speedy application since it has a plastic end instead of the regular bristled spool. This means that I don't have to continuously dip back into my mascara bottle since the plastic holds in more than enough product for me to use on both sets of lashes. I keep my mascara and MVP in my bag for any touch ups between classes.

If you couldn't already tell, I like to keep my daily makeup routine simple. However, as much as I like keeping things simple, sometimes simple just won't cut it. My friends and I are impulsive--very impulsive. That usually means going out after classes. I keep a few products in my bag in order to glam it up for a night out. My favorite I-Line, Storm, is perfect for a smoky eye on the go. The All Day Latte Shadow STX adds a pop of burgundy to my smoky eye and it matches virtually any outfit. A Bronze + Glo  in Cocoa Cabana allows for a fast and easy contour/highlight combination. The last, and most important, thing I carry around is a Lip Cream + Color and D-Fine Lip Pencil for some late-night lip color. My favorite shade is Night Before, but I sometimes switch things up with a little Barely There.

This next tip can be our little secret. During the summer, I spent most of my time avoiding the outdoors. Netflix, my bed, and sweatpants are the only things I've interacted with on most days. I don't want the world to know this. Beauty For Real's (Total) Glo helps give off the illusion I've spent countless hours getting tanned under the summer sun. The body bronzer adds a sun-kissed glow to my already brown skin, and it spreads so easily that I barely need to use any product. The formula dries into my skin, so I don't have to worry about it smudging all over my textbooks like products from the past (yikes!).

With Jada's Beauty For Real Back To School Kit, you can have everything you need with the click of a button. The kit includes Lip Revival Sugar Scrub, MVP Tinted Moisturizer, Hi-Def Mascara, Storm 24/7 I-LINE, Bronze + Glo, and Barely There Lip Cream + Color. Find it here

But no fear, my dears, I’ve compiled a list of Do’s and Don’ts for you that will simplify your morning battle with your base.

Skincare for the Girl Who Sweats

By Portia Enriquez

If you didn’t already know, working out really helps clear your skin.  Increasing your heart rate increases your blood flow, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to cells throughout your body, including your face.  Not only will you look like you have a natural blush on, but you’re also helping your body rid of blemishes or acne that you hate so much.  Who doesn’t love getting a two for one deal?

I’m thankful that I’ve been blessed with amazing skin (not tooting my horn at all) so working out at the gym is helping extend the life of my young-looking appearance.  In addition to my gym routine, I have my very own skin care regimen that I follow before and after I get my sweat on.  This way I ensure I don’t have any breakouts and can apply my makeup on a smooth canvas.

Mornings are the best times for weightlifting in my gym, which is my favorite form of working out.  When I wake up at 4am, I make sure to cleanse my face with a gentle cleanser and put on a light moisturizer.  My favorites right now is Origins Frothy Face Wash and Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense Moisturizer with White Tea. I don’t wear anything heavy because I know that I’ll break a sweat and I don’t want my pores to get clogged.  I don’t like going to the gym with just a bare face because I believe in feeling your best whenever you walk out the door so I always put on a little Beauty For Real Blush+Glo.  My go-to shade is the Coral Crush and Hi Beam pair.  This blush and highlighter duo gives me a look of life so early in the morning and just makes me look great!

Blush + Glo

Leg days are the sweatiest days as I’m working out the largest muscle groups in my body and lifting about 100 lbs when I squat and do deadlifts!  It’s an exhilarating feeling when I complete my last set; I can feel my body working its hardest as the perspiration trickles down my temples when I’m finishing my last few reps (Phew!). But I have to be careful not to wipe that sweat off my forehead because I’ll spread bacteria all over my face.  My recommendation is to pat the sweat off using different parts of your towel as you move across your face and neck. This way you’re absorbing the sweat into the towel and not spreading it.

Driving home after a good day in the gym is a wonderful feeling of achievement!  As soon as I get home I make sure have a full glass of water and fully wash my face (again)!  I know, it’s a little repetitious, but I have to do it to guarantee that I’m taking the best care of my skin.  Once I’m done cleansing I move on to my full on routine.  Once I’ve dried my skin I use Aveda’s Botanical Kinetics Toning Mist to help balance the pH of my skin after cleansing.  Using a toner allows your skin to absorb product so it doesn’t just sit on the surface.  Now depending on your skin type, make sure to apply a moisturizer with a good SPF and let it dry before you start your makeup routine.  You might even find a great tinted moisturizer with SPF like our new Beauty For Real MVP Perfect+Protect Tinted Moisturizer and Concealer duo so you can knock all of this out in one application!  This is what I use and it eliminates a few minutes from my morning routine and allows me to enjoy my fresh cup of joe while I plan for the rest of the day.

MVP

So I’ve walked through my skin care regimen during my preferred workout routine, but for all you outdoor workout gurus who enjoy running, yoga in the park, and CrossFit, there’s one thing that you must do if you’re going to be out in the sun.  Make sure you’re putting on some sunscreen with a high SPF! Ensure you’re applying this to both your face and the parts of skin that will be exposed to the sun to protect your epidermis from harmful UV Rays.  You can definitely put to use Beauty For Real’s MVP Perfect+Protect on your face during this time.  We’re launching 5 beautiful shades that will just make you look and feel beautiful wherever or whatever you’re doing.  Make sure to mark your calendars on the day it launches!  This is a must-have product!

Last but not least for all you sweaty glammed-up gym rats, when you get home at the end of the day, do not forget to wash your face before you head to bed; whether you’re coming home from work or the gym.  It would be a shame to put all your hard work to waste to just fall asleep and wake up with day old makeup…then to put more on for the new day.  Our skin needs to breathe and regenerate some new skin cells so we always look bright, vibrant, and new!

Now, go on you BFR Beauties!  Take on the world looking fabulous in the workplace and in the gym!

How to Remove Dark Circles from Under Your Eyes

Trying to downsize on your makeup routine would be so much easier if dark circles didn’t exist. If you’re like me, you’ve tried 20 different combinations of concealers and foundation but they just aren’t enough to cover them up. It may make up for discoloration but it doesn’t make up for hollowness or puffiness… not even close. Not to mention that heavy cover-up may look great in pictures but in person, it looks cakey. Last month, I tried my millionth peach concealer that claimed to be “the best concealer for under eyes” and once again, came out disappointed. I decided to put my foot down. Enough with the cover-up! There must be another way…

After hours of research, I was happy to find out there is a solution! For a month now, I’ve transformed my routine to include less heavy makeup and more skincare. Here’s what I’ve found:

First of all, not all dark circles are created equally. There are puffy dark circles AKA bags under your eyes, hollow dark circles, dark circles from stress, dark circles from lack of sleep, dark circles from sleeping too much, hereditary dark circles, and more. The good news is there are preventive measures and ways to remove your dark circles! Before you start trying all the remedies in the book, you must identify why you have bags under your eyes in the first place.

For example, I had puffy dark eye bags in the morning and hollow throughout the rest of the day. They were probably caused because I work long hours in front of the computer, I sleep too much on weekdays and not enough on weekends, and my diet was not the best. Because I know this about myself, I’ve been able to treat my under eyes with appropriate treatments and in just a month, the difference is pretty remarkable.  I apply cucumber slices to refresh my eyes whenever I get the chance and apply ice when my eyes are very swollen. In addition to this, I’ve tried a couple eye creams and have found that Clinique All About The Eyes during the day and Shiseido White Lucent Anti-Dark Circle Cream are the most effective for me.  They are gentle, unscented (some have such a strong scent it burns your eyes), and the skin really absorbs it. The ingredients increase blood circulation and constriction, attack dark pigmentation by slowing melanin production, and reflect light thus, brightening the skin. These are all common body processes that cause dark circles and they target them all!

I’ve identified 10 common causes and found pertinent solutions for each. Remember that your dark circles may be caused by multiple factors and therefore, you may have to try multiple treatments. Also, because there are so many factors involved dermatologists say you can’t remove them permanently. Unfortunately changing your sleep schedule and controlling mental or physical stress, hormones, or genetics aren’t always feasible solutions if they are your root culprit for puffy dark circles, but these quick-fixes definitely help minimize them.  Best part about it is these solutions are natural, they are low to no cost, they’re simple to do and they’re easy to implement in your daily routine!

Cause 1 - Dry skin under eyes

Solution: The skin under your eyes is the most sensitive part of your face because it is so thin. Instead of washing your face with hot water, which strips the eye area of essential oils, wash your face with lukewarm or cool water. Steer clear of alcohol-based products such as makeup remover, which is especially irritating and drying to the skin. After your face cleansing routine, don’t forget to moisturize! Again, be sure to avoid applying any alcohol-based product near the eyes, you may want to consider a different, more natural moisturizer for the under eyes such as coconut oil or almond oil.  Dabbing it on with cotton pads soaked with the moisturizer is better than using your fingers to apply moisturizer because you’ll be tempted to rub which is detrimental to the under eyes.

Cause 2 - Long hours in front of a screen

Solution: If you work with computers daily or binge-watch TV (I’m guilty, too), your eyes strain and muscles around the eyes are activated. This causes your eyes to become tired and unable to relax. When you do this, you should take a break at least every 10 minutes to give your eyes a chance to relax and focus on something else. Also, cup your eyes in your palms every hour to relax the muscles around your eyes and improve circulation of the blood. Remember don’t rub! This area is extremely sensitive and rubbing will cause redness, dryness, and puffiness.

Cause 3 - Sleep habits

Solution: Lack of sleep and too much sleep can both cause dark circles but this is sometimes inevitable. Something to note is that regularly sleeping on your stomach or on your side causes fluids to pool in your eyes. Try sleeping on your back with your head elevated!

Cause 4 - An unhealthy diet

Solution: As with most skincare solutions, cleaning up the inside can really reflect in your appearance. A diet high in salt causes fluid retention, you can combat this by not only ensuring your sodium intake is low but also to drink ample fluid to prevent dehydration.

Other foods you should implement in your diet are fruits, green leafy vegetables especially kale, cabbage and spinach which are high in Vitamin K and Vitamin B12, which help with blood circulation. Liver, broccoli, brussels sprouts, carrots, spinach and strawberries are also great for this.

Iron carries oxygen so a lack of it can give the cells under your eyes a dark appearance. Lack of iron also pales your skin which accentuates the darkness of the under eyes even more. Red meat, pork and chicken, beans, and dried fruit, such as are high in iron.

Consume foods that are rich in vitamin E such as nuts, milk, eggs, fish and vegetable oils. Vitamin E’s antioxidant capability serves to protects cell tissues from things like environmental pollutants and harmful sun rays.

Cause 5 - Change of medication

Solution: Vasodilators dilate or widen blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily through. The more blood that flows the more you can see through the skin, therefore, showing up as dark circles under your eyes. Common vasodilators are Hydralazine, ACE inhibitors, and Minoxidil.

The best way to constrict the blood vessels under the eyes is with a cold compress. Wrap a washcloth around an ice cube and hold against the lower lid. You can also keep a spoon in the refrigerator and gently hold it against the area.

Cause 6 - Allergies

Solution: For some people, dark circles occur when the skin under the eyes becomes inflamed as part of an allergic reaction to particular foods such as dairy and gluten. First, you’ll want to try to eliminate foods that contain these allergens as much as possible. Touching or rubbing the skin makes it worse, so try eye drops soothe the itchiness. Lastly, try sleeping with retinol eye cream overnight. By stimulating the production of collagen, the swelling will be less obvious.

Cause 7 - Consumption of coffee and tea

Solution: I found multiple sources that consuming it can cause exhaustion, which in turn contributes to dark circles. That being said, avoid consuming caffeine-rich fluids and replace them with water or non-caffeinated herbal tea. However, applying caffeine-rich products onto your under eyes can actually be helpful! Check out this amazing DIY Coffee Eye mask:

Cause 8 - Excessive alcohol intake

Solution: Alcohol dehydrates your skin as much as it dehydrates the rest of your system. The first thing you should do after a night out is to drink lots of water so you can get rid of the toxins fast and then moisturize. To fight dullness of the skin, eat foods rich in vitamin C like oranges and grapefruits.

Cause 9 - Makeup Routine

Solution: When applying makeup, treat your under eyes with extra care. For example, when applying concealer, pat or dab it on, do not drag. Also, use your ring finger which is the weakest of them all! Sleeping with makeup is also a habit you should aim to get rid of. It’s yet another thing that dries out the skin. Remember, oil-based makeup remover is better than alcohol-based for this same reason.

Cause 10 - Excessive exposure to the sun.

Solution: Sun exposure makes your body produce more melanin and causes pigmentation under the eyes. If your under-eye circles are blue, it’s probably genetic but if they’re brown, they may be due to excessive exposure to the sun. Try using a cream containing citrus, or even lemon juice, which has brightening properties. And of course, sunglasses and wearing extra sun-block under the eyes every day is the ultimate preventative measure because the older you get, the darker they will get.

Another great treatment for dark circles is vitamin E gel. Clip off the tip of the capsule and use a cotton swab to apply it under the eyes every night. It soothes, moisturizes, and protects the under eyes.

Now, remember, there are dozens of more reasons for the dark circles under your eyes, and you can (and should!) try multiple of these treatments. Also, it’s important to be consistent because you’ll see results faster! You should see significant changes within 14 days.

Leave a comment and let us know what worked for you, we’d love to hear how our busy beauties keep fresh-faced and bright-eyed.

5 Common Makeup Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

At Beauty For Real, we understand that not everyone is a professional makeup artist like Leslie. Most #bfrbeauties are women, like you who love our products because they're easy to use and don’t require hours of YouTube tutorials to apply. There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to spend a ton of time on your makeup. However, if you are breezing through your beauty routine, you may be making some of these common makeup mistakes. Fortunately, they all have simple fixes.

Lip color on dry lips

It’s winter, and if you live in a cold-weather climate, you are probably combatting chapped lips on a daily basis. If you’re a lip-color lover, you don’t want to give up rocking your reds just because your lips look a bit rough. However, whether it is a lip cream, lipstick, or lip gloss, when you apply it to dry, chapped lips, it will accentuate the bumpy texture. Fortunately, there is a very simple solution: exfoliating lip scrub. When you find your lips have dried out, simply apply our Lip Revival scrub to your lips and gently rub with your finger to exfoliate. Voila! Smooth lips that will look flawless, whatever lip color you choose.

The wrong foundation

This is probably the most common makeup mistake in the book. It makes sense because most people make the mistake of trying to match the color by applying it to the hand or arm. To make sure you have the right color, don’t test on your hand; test directly on your jaw line, as your skin tone and shade is often different on your face. Additionally, your skin tone varies with the season; your skin could be as much as four shades darker in summer! To combat this problem, invest in a different shade of foundation for each season.

Blush in places it shouldn't be

Well-applied blush livens your face with a bit of color, but poorly applied blush can age you and make you look clownish. Some women make the mistake of applying blush below their cheekbones, which ages the face by making it look saggier. Others apply circles of blush to the apples of their cheeks, creating a clownish look. Instead, your blush should go along your cheekbones, drawing the eye upward to create length.

Overdrawn brows

Bold brows have seen a resurgence in popularity recently thanks to beauty icons like Cara Delevingne, and as a result, more and more women are investing in brow pencils, gels, powders, and waxes. While we love a strong brow, a little goes a long way. Avoid going too intense with your eyebrows by using a shade lighter than your natural hair color and applying with a light hand.

Too much bronzer

Everyone loves a sun-kissed glow, but there is a point where it goes from bronzed beauty to carrot real quick if you aren’t careful. When you are applying to your face, lightly brush over your forehead, temples, neck, and nose instead of all over your face. If you are looking to add a bit of color to your body, use our body bronzer for subtle illumination for any skin tone.

Why Our Mascara Is Paraben Free

Black mascara from Beauty For Real

If you have ever shopped our awesome eye makeup at Beauty For Real, you may have noticed that our black mascara, Hi-Def Mascara, is paraben free. More and more cosmetics companies are moving away from products with parabens in them. You might have noticed “paraben-free” labels popped up left and right, but you may not know exactly why. In this blog, we will give the lowdown on what parabens are and why we don’t put them in our best-selling volumizing mascara.

What are parabens?

Parabens are preservatives that have been used in a variety of beauty products since the 1950s. These chemicals are used to prevent bacteria, fungus, and mold growth. From lotions to shampoos to lipsticks to eyeshadow, parabens are present in roughly 85 percent of all cosmetics, making them the most used type of preservative in makeup. This is because they are very cheap and have proven to be effective.

So what’s the problem?

The problem is that recent research has shown that paraben may have detrimental effects on our health. Specifically, the issue is that research into breast cancer has discovered the presence of parabens in breast cancer tumors. Parabens have the ability to mimic estrogen, and estrogen exposure has been linked to the development of breast cancer. Some scientists believe that the prevailing presence of parabens in cosmetics may be messing with our endocrine systems because repeated exposure to these chemicals is disrupting the estrogen receptors in our bodies. Some researchers believe that the prevalence of parabens is linked to the rising rates of breast cancer. While we don’t know for sure if parabens really cause cancer, recent studies have led some scientists to be concerned. For example, one Danish study recently discovered that after participants applied lotions with parabens to their skin, parabens were detected in their blood hours later. Because of the ubiquity of parabens, their estrogen-mimicking abilities, and our ability to quickly and effectively absorb them into our bodies, we should be concerned about the potential impact of parabens.

What to watch out for

If you are concerned about the effects of these chemicals like we are, luckily, you have alternatives. When shopping for any personal care items, check for “paraben-free” labels. Read the ingredients and look for the following chemicals: butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, and anything else that ends in -paraben. As more and more consumers become aware of the potential problems with paraben, you will probably see more paraben-free options soon.

Better safe than sorry

In short, more research needs to be done on parabens to determine exactly how concerned we should be about their effects. While small amounts of parabens may be harmless, at Beauty For Real, we’d rather play it safe. After all, our mascara is going near your eye; who wants potentially toxic chemicals there?! We always aim for our products to be natural with as few ingredients as possible because we’re all about simplicity and quality.

When you need a volumizing mascara that won’t smudge and contains no parabens, shop Beauty For Real for one of our favorite products, Hi-Def Mascara.

Make Your Makeup Last All Day Long

Your makeup looks amazing when you first apply it in the morning, but by the time you get home at the end of the day, it looks like you didn’t even put any on! Fortunately, when you have the right products and techniques, you can have flawless makeup all day long. Read on for some tips for making your makeup last.

Prep your pores

The first step to ensuring your makeup lasts all day is exfoliation. When you exfoliate, you shed those pesky dead skin cells, leaving smooth skin behind. This allows you to apply your makeup evenly, which will in turn, last longer. Invest in a good exfoliating face scrub to use twice a week, and try our exfoliating lip scrub before one of our lip creams for flawless lip color that lasts all day.

Less is more

It might makes sense to you to layer your makeup to make it last longer, but this is actually counterproductive. When you add too much product to your face, it is more likely to smear and smudge. This is especially true for foundation, so always use a light hand (or even better, brush!). One way to accomplish this is by applying a thin layer with a brush, then using a sponge to absorb any excess product.

Use the right products

At Beauty For Real, we designed our makeup for real women who don’t have time to spend worrying all day about how their faces look. Our customers want to look beautiful when they apply makeup in the morning, and be able to feel confident they still look good at 3 p.m. That is why we design our makeup to be both easy to apply and long-lasting! For example, our formula for our blush/luminizer is specially designed to go on creamy for easy application, but dry as a powder to set. The key to makeup that lasts all day is using the right products that are designed for all-day wear. Whether you use our black eyeliner, our water resistant mascara, or our long-lasting lip liner, you are bound to look flawless all day long.

Don’t get too touchy

We all do it: at some point today, without thinking about it, you touched your face. This is not the end of the world, but you should definitely avoid touching your face when you can. Not only are you spreading germs and allergens and clogging your pores, you’re also ruining your makeup. It doesn’t matter if you are using the best long-wear makeup money can buy; if you keep rubbing, picking at, and putting your hands on your face, you are going to lose some makeup along the way. Do yourself a favor and keep those paws off yourself!

Set it up

If you really need your makeup to look perfect after hours of wear, you may want to set it with a translucent powder or a setting spray. Applying a light layer of translucent powder with a soft makeup brush gives you the staying power of a powder without messing with your makeup. Alternatively, setting sprays are designed to keep your makeup in place all day long. After you have done with your makeup, spritz your face and head out the door. At Beauty For Real, our long-lasting makeup lets you put your best face forward, even hours after application! From exfoliating lip scrub to long-lasting lip cream to waterproof eyeliner, shop all of our makeup essentials today.
